The Queen and her husband Prince Philip acknowledged the customs of their hosts as they visited the gurdwara in Hounslow yesterday.

As a mark of mutual respect, they were decorated with garlands of white and pink flowers as a crowd of several hundred people cheered their arrival at the gurdwara.

The Queen bowed her head as she entered the sacred hall.

The Duke of Edinburgh, shoes removed, followed behind wearing a blue headscarf bearing the symbol of Khanda, the Holy Sikh swords.

She viewed an exhibition to mark the 400th anniversary of the Guru Granth Sahib and, in the gurdwara canteen, she was introduced to representatives of local Asian groups.
