Nothing has recently caused as much disquiet in Indias political and journalistic communities as the promulgation of the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance.
At stake is the citizens freedom and the fairness of the judicial system.
Thats why Parliament must oppose POTO tooth and nail as soon as it convenes so it can never become a full-fledged law.
POTO has generated much heatnot ("not" in italics) because we dont need to fight terrorism, but because it is a counter-productive instrument for doing so.
Like TADATerrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act, POTO will promote irresponsible policing, and impose drastic penalties upon suspects without proof of guilt.
This can only fuel more discontent and aggravate sub-state terrorism.
