RJD decides to field candidates in Jharkhand

RANCHI, Feb 10 (UNI) The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) is gearing up to mark its presence in Jharkhand by fielding candidates in at least five of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in the coming parliamentary election.

The party which is having an alliance with Congress in Bihar, is also knocking the doors of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) to have an alliance with them with a view to block the BJP from winning any seat from the state, according RJD state unit spokesman Monahar Yadav.

Talking to UNI here today, Yadav, however, made it clear that the party's central committee and its supremo Laloo Prasad Yadav would take the final decision regarding any alliance with other parties in the state.

The party has no member in the dissolved Lok Sabha from the state, which had elections before the creation of the new state.

This is the first time the state would have parliamentary election.

Punjab governor invites Canadian investment in power sector CHANDIGARH, Feb 10 (UNI) Inviting Canadian investment in power sector in state governor justice (retd) OP Verma has said the power sector offers huge potential for foreign collaboration as much in generating new resources as in optimum utilisation of existing ones.

Speaking after inaugurating an interaction with members of a Canadian Power Mission to Chandigarh yesterday, he said bureaucratic bottlenecks did exist, however, these were not insurmountable in the changing economic scenario.

The interaction was organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Canada.

Verma said the union government and its ministry of power had envisioned reliable, affordable and quality power suply for all by the year 2012.

He said there had been a significant increase in the private sector's participation in various projects relating to generation and transmission.

The New Delhi Power Limited, BSES, Yamuna Power Limited, BSES Rajdhani Power Limited and Noida Power Company were examples of private sector participation for distribution of power, he added.

Trade officer Janet Chater in her presentation on the Canadian Energy Capabilities said her country, as the world's largest producer of hydle power and second largest electricity exporter globally, had the technology leadership to open up new doors of expertise, technology and funding for India, both in the government and joint sectors.

She said international capabilities, flexible and adaptable companies and innovative export financing made projects in electric power a Canadian specialty.

Chater, while tracing her country's strengths in power generation, transmission and distribution as well as its capability in services, said Canada was committed to develop business and other ties with India.

Canadian firms, she said were working in India's power sector since the 1960s and had contributed to around 10 of India's Hydel Power Projects.
