"....A year and a half ahead of completion and already 1,680ft tall, the skyscraper known as Burj Dubai in Dubai has become the world's tallest building." The Independent, UK.
"Imagine reaching out and touching the clouds!" sighed the wife wistfully as we stood on our balcony and I smiled at Monica the aspiring model from the next building who smiled back at me.
"Why ever would you want to do that?" I shuddered.
"Well at 1,680 feet that's about all you'll be able to touch." said the wife glaring at Monica who smiled at her and continued hanging her clothes on the balcony line.
"I wouldn't want to live 1680 feet up!" I shuddered again.
"You wouldn't?" asked the wife looking at me with interest.
"No! Never!" I said, "Imagine looking out and seeing the clouds!" "That's what I just said!" "Frightening!" I shouted and Monica grinned at me.
"Frightening?" "Yes," I said, "clouds are supposed to be above you, not hanging around peeping into your window.
I'd find it scary! I already feel like blacking out!" "You do?" "Yes," I said nodding my head vigorously and watching Monica nodding back, "if we were meant to be that high up, we would have been equipped with wings!" "Ah so you could fly?" "Yes," I said, "yes!" My wife looked at Monica who was still trying to put the same nightie on the clothesline.
"What else would you be scared off, living on the 160 th floor?" "One hundred and sixtieth floor?" I whistled shrilly.
"That's how high you'll be!" "Awful!" "Awful?" "Yes," I said, "imagine looking out and seeing nothing!" "Except clouds!" "Except clouds!" I shuddered.
"It would be quite lonely for you, wouldn't it dear husband?" "Yes," I said, "you do understand don't you? I would feel awfully lonely at the top!" "But suppose," said my wife looking across at Monica, "they put up another building equally tall next door? And another one behind, and another at the side?" "That would be great!" I said, clapping my hands enthusiastically.
"And I guess that would mean having Monicas in all those buildings around?" I stood at the bus stop that morning and didn't hear her walking to me, "You screamed and disappeared from the balcony?" Monica asked.
"Did I?" I asked looking at her zombie like, "Would you mind not shifting into the flat opposite my 160th floor one, I don't want to find out whether a rolling pin hurts even more 1680 feet up in the air..!" I said, quickly walking away to the next bus stop, rubbing the side of my head.
