Shabir Ibn Yusuf SRINAGAR, Feb 21: After the recent heavy snowfall and subsequent avalanches in village Nageenpora and Mirasnard of Qazigund, the houses of residential houses in both the villages are not safe.
Also many children and elders have been falling ill.
This was stated by the director of Non-Government Organization (NGO) Khoshish, Dr Raouf Ahmad Malik, who visited the affected villages today.
The N G O Koshish in collaboration Child Rights and You (CRY) distributed relief among 125 families of affected villages.
The NGO distributed warm clothes among the children up to 14 years of age.
The people were given shoes, medicines, and glycerin and baby food for children.
"The residential houses have been damaged and those are not safe for living," Dr Malik told Kashmir Times.
"Every house has suffered damage due the snow," he added.
He said the villages being hilly and snow adorned, tragedy can not be averted.
"We could not move completely in village, it is quite hectic and there is yet more than four feet snow." The residents of the villages after the evacuation according to Dr Malik were kept in two schools and only yesterday they been sent back to their respective villages.
He showed concern and said, "There are 150 children and maximum of them are ill.
They need immediate treatment," Malik said and said his NGO is going to organize a medical camp in the area.
"We are proposing but it very difficult because of snow" adding "In the schools from February 2nd they have been given pulses only and that has affected the health of people particularly the children." The condition of the cattle is no different and they at the verge of extinction, Malik said, "The fodder meant for cattle has got buried under the snow and now there is no lively stock for cattle at all in the villages."
