I heeded my 'inner voice' RAE BARELI, June 11 (UNI) Congress president Sonia Gandhi today struck a philosophical chord with the electorate in her parliamentary constituency by observing that "someone" should be there to refuse the prime minister's post.
Addressing party workers at Para Kalan here, Gandhi said "you are sad...But someone should be there to reject the post as everyone wants to become the PM," and maintained she listened to her inner voice while refusing the coveted post.
Accompanied by her son and Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi, Gandhi said the people should support her decision.
"I am happy today...My aim is not to take up any post but to fight for the cause of people," she claimed.
Attacking the opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA), she said much against the NDA expectations, the newly-formed United Progressive Alliance (UPA) was able to form a government at the centre and prepare a Common Minimum Programme (CMP).
"The CMP would take care of all stratas of the society," said the chairperson of the National Advisory Council.
Acknowledging support of the electorate for routing the NDA, Gandhi said "Mujhe Janta Ke Vivek Par Garv Hai" (I am proud at the decision of the people).
She said the electorate of today could not be taken for a ride by slogans and costly campaigns.
"Unhone Apni Taaarif Ke Dhol Peetey," (they blew their own trumpet) and added that people saw through the ploy.
Later, Rahul thanked the gathering for electing Gandhi as their MP.
"Senapati Ke Bolne Ke Baad, Sipahi Kya Bole?" (what can a follower say after the leader has spoken), he concluded.
