COLOMBO, Dec 7 (Reuters) Sri Lankas main opposition United National Party (UNP) today won the countrys parliamentary election, securing a narrow majority in the 225-member assembly with the support of a Muslim ally.
Final official results showed the UNP winning 109 seats with its ally the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) taking five seats, state television said.
The Peoples Alliance, whose leader Chandrika Kumaratunga remains President, had 77 seats and its Marxist ally the Peoples Liberation Front took 16 seats.
The rest of the seats went to Tamil parties most of whom have a tacit alliance with the UNP.
