Students from other states protest against KU

KT NEWS SERVICE JAMMU , Sep 16 : Hundreds of students from different parts of the country today took to the streets here protesting against the Kashmir University's decision to postpone the BEd examination, scheduled to start from today.

The students, studying in different colleges in the Kashmir valley, protested against the decision and said it was unjustified and ruthless.

They told newspersons here that they had completed their syllabus in August 2008 to appear in the BEd examination in September.

However, due to disturbances in Kashmir, they returned to their homes in different parts of the country, including Punjab, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and other far off states.

However, the university issued a circular declaring that examination would be held from today, along with the candidates of Leh and Kargil districts.

"After rushing back here, we were shocked to know that now the university has decided to conduct the examinations in November ending when the temperature goes down," they said.

They said it was very difficult for them to appear in the examination in minus temperature since they belong to states where weather remaind warm.

They said to their surprise, the examinations in Leh and Kargil were conducted as scheduled.

The students appealed to university authorities to reconsider their decision and conduct the examinations early.

However, recent curfew, strike and agitation on Amarnath land row has badly affected the preparation of new Photo Identity Cards (PIC) in the state.

Official sources said District Elections Officer (DEO), Srinagar has convened a meeting of Booth Level Officers (BLOs) of district in his office today.

The BLOs of Amira Kadal and Sonawari, Hazratbal and Habakadal constituencies would attend todays meeting while BLOs of Zadibal and Eidgah, Khanyar and Batmaloo constituencies have been asked to attend tomorrow.

Sources said about 23 lakh new PIC are yet to be distributed among the voters in the state.

They said disturbances for about two months had badly affected the PIC preparation and distribution.

Now the work has been taken on war footing to meet any deadline, sources said.

There were also some reports that non-state subjects were also enrolled in the voters lists for Assembly elections.

However, the authorities immediately directed the concerned DEOs to ensure that the names are deleted and officials found guilty are punished.
