Swamy demands Fernandes resignation or removal

CHENNAI Nov 10 (UNO)Janata Party president Dr Subramaniam Swamy today demanded that defence minister George Fernandes must immediately resign or be removed by the president as he has been summoned to appear before the Venkataswami Commission, which is probing the defence deal expose by Tehelka.Com.

In a statement released here, he charged that under section 8b of the commission of inquiry act, "only those about whom a commission is likely to reach an adverse conclusion and indict him, is summoned to appear before it".

Mr Fernandes must either resign or be removed as he has come under a "legal cloud", following the issuance of summons.

Dr Swamy also alleged that prime minister A B Vajpayee, who had been criticising the United States for practising double standards on the issue of terrorism, could not highlight this point forcefully to US president George Bush in his current visit to that country.

Charging the prime minister with practising double standards, he said while he criticised "Islamic terrorism", he was softpedalling "Hindu terrorism"(Babri Masjid demolition).
