CHENNAI, June 23 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today hit out at the "dubious role" being played by the Left parties in the UPA government's decision to hike the price of petrol and diesel.
Announcing that the party would observe state wide 'Rail Roko' stir on June 27 to protest the hike, party's state unit Chief C P Radhakrishnan alleged that the Left, while agreeing to the decision to the hike, was now launching agitations against it.
"They are making a mockery of democracy while being part of the government and acting like an opposition party at the same time," he charged.
He also announced that the state unit of BJP would resort to the agitation of burning the effigies of the leaders of Left parties and the Prime Minister, after the 'Rail Roko' stir.
While admitting that the erstwhile NDA government had also increased the fuel prices, he sought to clarify that the price was brought down on two occasions.
"But the hike was not so steep as now," he claimed and demanded an immidiate rolling back of the prices of petrol and diesel.
The prices of vegetables had also increased as a result of the increase of fuel price by the UPA government, hitting the common man hard, he charged.
Radhakrishnan also strongly criticised DMK President M Karunanidhi for justifying the hike.
Talking about the BJP's national executive to be held in Chennai in July, he said the exact dates would be announced by the party's Central leadership soon.
The party has embarked on a drive to enrol members to strengthen its base in Tamil Nadu, he informed.
