Two washed away, 35 rescued in Jammu, Kathua

KT NEWS SERVICE JAMMU, Jul 27: Amid high alert in most parts of Jammu, Kathua and Reasi districts in lieu of flood warnings, rains today created havoc in several areas these districts.

While at-least 35 marooned people were rescued in Jammu and Kathua districts, one person was washed away in the strong water currents in Mahore tehsil of Reasi district.

Some areas of Reasi, Rajouri, Poonch, Ramban, Udhampur, Kishtwar and Kathua districts were virtually cut off from rest of the country due to landslides at several link roads.

The traffic flow on Jammu-Srinagar national highway, however, remained through and Amarnath yatra reached its destination safely.

The water level in Tawi, Chenab, Basantar and Ujh has risen to danger marks while several nallahs were over flooded with scores of vehicles including trucks, tractor trollies and tippers trapped.

A flood alert has been sounded in most parts of Jammu, Kathua and Reasi districts while several small bridges and diversions in Poonch district suffered extensive damages.

Reports from Reasi said that an elderly man washed away in the flash flood in Baggo Nallah in village Chasana area of Mahore Tehsil in district Reasi.

Police said that Sher Singh, 58, son of Lacho resident of Baggo was washed away in the flash flood in Baggo Nallah in village Chasana.

He was crossing the Nallah and suddenly the flow of water rises and he washed away in the Nallah.

There was no clue about the drowned man till the last reports came in.

A case has been registered in this regard.

Meanwhile, another youth had a narrow escape in flash flood while crossing the river Chenab in village Panasa in Reasi.

Ramesh, 20, son of Shanker was crossing the river Chenab and suddenly the level of water rose.

He immediately took shelter on the stone in the river.

He was noticed by some villagers who immediately rushed to spot and informed the police in this regard.

After four hours he was saved by villagers.

The villagers who saved him included Gurjeet Singh, Radesh Manhas, Viswash Sharma and Kuldeep.

In Jammu, four students among 21 persons were rescued from Tawi river in different areas of city outskirts.

Eleven persons including four students of Shri Ranbir Singh Higher Secondary School, who skipped their classes, were trapped in the flash floods in Tawi river near Sidhra bridge, this morning.

Identified as Amardeep Singh and Sahil both residents of Kunjwani and Arjun of Channi all Higher Secondary Part-I students and Vishal of Kunjwani (Higher Secondary Part-II) students were, however, rescued by the army jawans and police using army boat, in an hour long rescue operation.

Their two motorbikes were also washed away in floods but these were saved by the labourers which were trapped in a tipper along with driver and cleaner.

Police said that these four youth skipped their classes and came to an island near Sidhra bridge in the morning at 9 AM.

All of sudden the water level rise and they got trapped.

Five persons who were trapped in the in the middle of Tawi river, this morning were also raised.

Three of them were identified as Fareed, Sultan and Wasim-all residents of Shargal.

Two other persons who were trapped along with their vehicle were also rescued by army and police.

Four persons each were rescued by the IAF chopper from Pirkhoo and temple near Circular road Panjthirthi.

Two persons were rescued from Nikki Tawi area in Raipur Satwari by army jawans using a boat.

Defence spokesman said that civil administration approached Air Force Station Jammu due to flash flood in Tawi River wherein nine civilians were stranded in a small island near ‘Har Ki Pauri’ Jammu.

Marooned due to strong and rising water currents, rescue of these people could not be carried out by boats.

Promptly responding to the distress call, helicopter based at Air Force Station Jammu swung into action and was at the site within 15 minutes.

“This is the third successful rescue operation carried out by the unit in past ten days wherein forty seven persons caught in the flash floods in Jammu and Kathua region have been evacuated to safety.

The rescue operation once again displayed the promptness with which Indian Air Force responds to the calamities,” spokesman added.

In Kathua, 12 labourer, seven of them residents of Jharkhand and five locals, who were marooned in flash floods of river Ujh while working on a bridge over the same river, were rescued by local divers.

Official reports said that two youth identified as Kasho Din of Mahi Chak and Pritipal Singh of Ghatti today exhibited rarest courage by rescuing 12 labourer who were marooned in flash floods of river Ujh while working on a bridge over the same river.

Nearly 12 labourers who were working on construction site of a bridge over Ujh river were trapped in flash floods and were about to be drowned, this afternoon.

On seeing the persons in trouble, the two youth putting their life at risk jumped into the river and rescued those labourers.

A flood alert was issued in Jammu as heavy rains continued to lash the city on second consecutive day.

According to reports, several structures collapsed in the city and its outskirts.

The flash floods caused damage in some parts of Bahu Fort, Qasim Nagar, Shanker Nagar (Gangyal) and Gorkha Nagar where the water entered the houses and also damaged boundary walls, created cracks in residential structures and school buildings.

Some city roads were flooded with water exposing the arrangements of Jammu Municipal Corporation.

The water level of the Tawi and Chenab rivers rose sharply.

According to flood control department the water level of Tawi river was at-least 14 feet.

The authorities appealed people living on the bank of Tawi river not to move close to the river keeping in view danger due to huge flow of water.

The water level in Chenab also had risen to 34 feet i.e.

1 feet below the danger mark.

The farmers of villages Garkhal, Narsingpura, Pargwal, Ladia, Sangrampur, Dalpad, Bhor, Inderpattan and Hamirpur suffered losses to their crops due to rising water level in Akhnoor tehsil.

Local administration had put police and army on high alert in Akhnoor.

However, the water level started going down after 1 PM.

Floods in Tawi and Chenab river have been recorded today, 14 feet gauge was recorded in Tawi river and 35 feet gauge in Chenab river.

Irrigation and Flood Control department officer informed that flood in Chenab and Tawi are quite normal.

"17 feet is the danger line of Tawi river whereas 35 feet is the danger level of Chenab river" he informed besides added that both river are flowing below danger line.

Moderate floods are also recorded in Ujj river and other seasonal nallas of Jammu region.

He added that situation is fully under control and department is totally ready to tackle any untoward incident.

Meanwhile, Amarnath yatra reached its destination safely today.

Huge traffic jams were witnessed on the highway.

Official reports said that yatra will leave the base camp tomorrow after confirmation of weather tomorrow morning at 3 AM.
