The Union Cabinet has given its approval to Delhi Metro Phase 5, a Rs 65,000 crore expansion project that will add 150 kilometers of new lines and 108 stations to the national capital's rapid transit network.
The expansion, planned for completion by 2030, will extend the metro network into currently underserved areas including a Ghaziabad eastern extension, a Dwarka-Gurugram direct corridor, and a high-speed Noida-Greater Noida link.
"This expansion will transform mobility in the NCR region," said Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Puri. "We expect Phase 5 to add 2 million daily riders to the system, bringing the total to over 10 million."
A key feature of Phase 5 is the introduction of driverless train operations on all new lines, a technology already being piloted on the Magenta Line. The new corridors will also feature enhanced last-mile connectivity through integrated bus terminals and cycling infrastructure.
Environmental impact assessments have been completed, and land acquisition for the first three corridors is already underway. DMRC expects construction to begin by early 2027.
