15,000 Bangladeshi nationals untraceable

KOLKATA, Nov 30 (UNI) Nearly 15,000 Bangladeshis have "vanished in the country till this October after entering India with valid travel documents in a security force official said today.

Border security forces Inspector general for the southern areas in West Bengal S B Kakati said that more than 1,90,000 Bangladeshi nationals had entered the country with visas till 0ctober and more than 15,000 had not returned after their visas expired.

"These people must have managed to mingle with the locals.

He, however, said the illegal entry from the Bangladesh border was "not very substantial, adding that it could be anywhere between ten and 15 per cent more than average in any year.

The BSF IG said steps had been intensified to tackle cross-border crimes and prevent smuggling.

Round-the-clock vigil was being maintained in the 1156-km long border with Bangladesh.

He said the BSF had "intercepted many people trying to enter India illegally.

While most of them did not talk about their alleged torture, 141 people had claimed that they had fled the country following persecution.
