Aftershock in Sumatra

NEW DELHI, Feb 17 (UNI): An earthquake of moderate intensity jolted the Northern Sumatra region in the Indian Ocean this morning.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) observatory, which recorded the tremor, said it measured 5.8 on the Richter scale.

The quake, which was felt at 1102 hrs, was epicentered in Northern Sumatra in Indonesia, IMD said.

The Sumatra region was the epicentre of the 9.3 magnitude earthquake on December 26 last year that triggered the killer tsunami in India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and other Asian countries.

The region has been hit by a series of aftershocks since December 26.
