Dr RML University, Faizabad defeat JU in opening tie

RML University, Faizabad, defeated Jammu University, Jammu, 35 - 22 in their inaugural match of the North-East Zone Inter-Varsity Handball tournament played today.

For RML University, the goal-getters were Ankur (6), Mridul (8) and Ashish (6).In other match, Punjab Techincal University (PTU), Jalandhar, defeated Choudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, comfortably 35-25 in the men's section.

Navandeep Singh of PTU was outstanding as he scored eleven goals in the event being held at Raja Bhalendra Singh Stadium in the campus of the local Punjabi University, under whose aegis the tourney is being held.

Forty two Universities in the men's section, and thirtynine in women's section, are taking part in the tournament.

In the women's section, Delhi University got walk over against Deen Dayal Upadhayay University, Gorakhpur, while Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth, Varanasi, got walk over against Awdesh Pratap Singh University, Rewa.

Earlier, Surjit Singh Rakhra, former Punjab MLA, inaugurated the Tournament whereby he assured of all possible financial help for the cause of such sporting competitions.

He said that the whole of Punjab is proud that Punjabi University has been winning the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy for the last two years.

He counselled that the University authorities should sit together to chalk out a sports programme for the rural youth so that they can be weaned away from taking drugs.

The Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, Dr Jaspal Singh, said that people like Surjit Singh Rakhra should come forward to uplift University sports which had not received the attention it deserved.
