Infiltration in Kashmir has decreased: BSF

NEW DELHI, Feb 19 (UNI) Border Security Force (BSF) director general Ajay Raj Sharma today said infiltration into Kashmir has come down in recent weeks.

"As compared to the past few months, there is definite decrease in the intensity of crossborder infiltration now," Sharma said when asked whether there was some change in the situation on the border following the thaw in Indo-Pak relations.

He was talking to media persons after inaugurating the annual operational communication conference of the BSF here.

He said that some of the steps taken recently like fencing of the border have helped a lot in warding off infiltrators, and aquiring of more modern surveillance systems would help solve this problem more effectively in future.

Stressing the urgency to modernise the BSF, Sharma said there should be speedy implementation of modernisation proposals.

He said there were delays in acquiring latest equipment because of the process of procurement through global tenders.

The impediments in the way of turning the BSF into a modern force should be identified and resolved soon, Sharma said addressing the conference.

Highlighting the importance of fast and clear communication in operations, Sharma said the operational scene today was highly dynamic, with reaction time for commanders being very small requiring quick processing and transfer of information.

The communications technology has seen revolutionary changes in the last few years and unless the BSF men keep themselves abreast with the latest technological changes and exploit them for betterment in the force, they will be left behind, he said.

Earlier addressing the delegates at the conference, IG (Communications) BSF Kamlesh Dekka said hiearchical communication was fast becoming secondary, giving way to seamless communication between top level commanders and the force on ground, making the communication support system a complex function.

Many items on the agenda for the meeting are dedicated to this theme, he added.

He said an amount of Rs 435 crore has been earmarked for implementation of a five-year plan for modernisation of BSF communications.
