LTTE woman suicide bomber bomber identified

COLOMBO, NOV 29 (Agencies): The woman suicide bomber of the LTTE, who blew herself up outside the office of a Sri Lankan Minister and senior Tamil leader in a failed bid to assassinate him, has been identified.

"We have recovered the National Identity Card from near her body which gives her name as Veganam Sujata, born in 1983 in Pulliyankulam Vavuniya," northern Sri Lanka, Mass Media and Information Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa told reporters today.

The minister said the matter would be thoroughly investigated to ensure such incidents are avoided "even though security has been very tight in Colombo and around." The disabled woman LTTE suicide bomber targeting Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) leader and Social Services Minister Douglas Devananda blew herself up when her attempt to assassinate the Minister was foiled.

While a Public Relations Officer of the minister was killed, two of his ministerial security guards were injured.

Speaking in Parliament today, Devananda said he was undeterred by threats from the LTTE.

"I am not afraid of threats by the LTTE and will continue to work for the people who are threatened by it," he said amidst thumping of desks by members.

"Although the LTTE dreams of killing me by sending suicide bombers, the truth never dies," Devananda said.

He said yesterday's twin bombings were an attempt to fracture harmony among the communities.

Last evening, another explosion in a busy market area near here had left 18 people dead.
