Pathos of widowhood captured on film

New Delhi, July 9 (UNI): The story of Priya, a young woman suddenly thrust into the sordid realm of widowhood, mirrors the life of scores of unfortunate women in India shunned by society for no fault of theirs.

The "White Rainbow," a one-and-a-half hour film inspired by true events in the lives of Indian widows like Priya and collected by the Guild of Service, an NGO, in its decade long work with widows, will be be premiered here tomorrow.

Announcing this, Guild chairperson Mohini Giri today said, "The film produced by Prabhu movies, actually chronicles the hard journey and unimaginable cruelty faced by a widow in India." "White Rainbow is the story of four remarkable women and their depths of despair and spires of hope.

Its a film which challenges the myths and traditions that relegate the Indian widow to live lives of servitude and poverty," she said.

"It is called White Rainbow because colour is very important to the Indian women and yet as soon as she becomes a widow she is forced to wear only white.

She is not allowed any jewelry or the 'bindi' for, symbolically, her life now has to be one devoid of colour even though she may have a myriad of colours inside," said Giri.

The film, shot mostly in Mathura and Vrindavan, took more than a year to complete and according to Giri, the producers plan to enter it at the next Cannes International Film festival.

"This is an effort to raise awareness levels about realities here and to help create a powerful advocacy statement to ensure that widows can attain the dignity of an empowered life." "It is to share with the world the agony and exploitation of widowhood in India, which goes beyond the loss of a loved one.

It is the loss of identity where the women is left alone and disoriented," Giri said.
