President invites Ranil for discussions to form govt

COLOMBO, Dec 7 (UNI) Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga today invited United National Front (UNF) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe for talks tomorrow to discuss the formation of the next government in the Island nation following the resignation of Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremenayake.

The Prime Minister, from the Peoples Alliance (PA), announced his resignation in a letter to the President today saying, "I resign to honour democracy and accept the defeat indicated by the results of the election." Counting is underway in the 12 parliamentary elections in the country.

The UNF led by United National Party (UNP) has already won in 14 of 15 electoral districts with 83 seats.

The ruling PA coalition is trailing with only one win in Monaragala district with 58 seats.

The UNF has won in Colombo, Gampaha, Anuradhapura, Kalutara, Ratnapuara, Nuwara-eliya, Polonnaruwa, Badulla, Matale, Marata, Kegalle, Galle, Hambantota and Puttlam districts.

The JVP has won 12 seats so far.

In Colombo district the UNF has got 12 seats with its leader Ranil Wickremsinghe leading with a stunning 4,15,686 votes, followed by UNP leaders Milinda Moragoda with 1,34,132 and Ravi Karunanayake with 1,29, 893 votes.

Earlier Sri Lankas Prime Minister resigned as the opposition headed for a victory in the countrys parliamentary election.

"I resign to honour democracy and accept the defeat indicated by the results of the election," Prime Minister Ratnasiri Mickremenayake, who is from the ruling Peoples Alliance, said in a letter to President Chandrika Kumaratunga.
