KOLKATA, Dec 4 (Agencies): Wasim Jaffer struck a gritty ton as defending champions Mumbai crawled to a commanding 254/1 in their first innings against a pedestrian Bengal bowling attack on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match here today.
Opener Jaffer (139; 272b, 368m, 21x4) and Vinit Indulkar (64; 182b, 232m, 9x4) were at the crease after an unfinished 171 run partnership for the second wicket at draw of stumps.
Earlier, electing to bat, Mumbai lost their only wicket in the form of Vinayak Mane (33; 98b, 135 m, 4x4) 15 minutes before lunch at the Jadavpur University campus ground, Salt Lake.
Mane and Jaffer added 84 runs for the opening wicket before the former played a Murtaza Lodhgar ball to mid on and set off for a run, but Bengal skipper Rohan Gavaskar's direct throw hit the stumps with Mane still short of his crease.
It was a frustrating day for the Bengal bowlers, who not only got little assistance from the docile track except during the early morning session when there was some uneven bounce on the wicket but also bowled wayward.
Jaffer, who was 'bowled' of a no ball by left-arm spinner Lodhgar when on 17, completed his second hundred of the tournament this year 22 minutes after tea.
The landmark was reached of 224 balls in 292 minutes.
Indulkar, on the other hand, got his half-century of 154 balls in 191 minutes, as the two batsmen played a patient game, waiting for the loose balls and were in little difficulty against the Bengal bowlers.
Brief scores: Mumbai 254/1 (W Jaffer 139 batting, V Indulkar 64 batting).
